Museokuoriainen on alunperin palearktinen laji ja sen luontainen esintymisalue kattaa Euraasian mantereen ja Pohjois Afrikan. Laji on levinnyt ihmisen mukana myös muualle Afrikkaan, Pohjois-Amerikkaan, Australiaan ja Uuteen-Seelantiin.
