Otsa sileä, ilman ulokkeita. Silmät kaljut. Tuntosarvet lyhytripsiset. Imukärsä täysin kehittynyt. Huulirihmat ylöspäin taipuneet; kärkijaoke lyhyt. Etusiipien suonet R2 ja R3 anastomoivat suonen R4 kanssa. Takasiipien suoni M2 hyvin kehittynyt, lähtee keskisaran poikkisuonen keskikohdan takapuolelta; suonet M3 ja CuA1 lyhytvarrelliset tai lähtevät keskisaran takakulmasta.

Toukkien ensimmäinen käsnäjalkapari puuttuu, toinen surkastunut.

Koiraiden peniculus hyvin kehittynyt. Sivulämssä liuskamainen, levenee hiukan kärkeenpäin; costan tyvi vahvasti ulkoneva ylöspäin suorakulmaisesti costan yläreunaan nähden; sacculus suuri, sen yläreunassa joskus suuri uloke tai pieniä hampaita; cucullus kitinisoitunut. Aedeaguksessa tavallisesti ei kornuutteja, coecum hyvin kehittynyt.

Kotelot talvehtivat.

Toukat elävät syksyllä saroilla (Carex) ja heinillä; koteloituvat kotelokoppaan karikkeeseen.
