Lehmänpapu – Vigna unguiculata

Stems are glabrous and sometimes slightly grooved, up to 4 m long. Leaves are alternate and trifoliate. Leaflets are oval, pointed, 6-15 cm x 4-11 cm, usually entire or sometimes lobed, glabrous or slightly pubescent. Stipules are ovate, 0.5-2 cm long, spurred at the base. Stipels are small. Flowers are papilionaceous, white, cream, yellow, mauve or purple, in up to 35 cm long axillary or terminal racemes. Fruits (legumes) are 6.5-30(-120) x 0.3-1.2 cm, usually in pairs, indehiscent. Seeds are oblong to almost globose, often laterally compressed, 0.5–1 cm long, black, brown, pink or white. The hilum is often ringed black or brown, strongly contrasting with the colour of the testa and hence the name "blackeyed beans".
