Kangasiltayökkönen – Acronicta cinerea

The status of this taxon in Finland is questionable as the classical genitalia difference in the valva is present in specimens of Åland Islands. The border of two types is not clear and there are intermediate specimens. However genitalia difference and adult appearance are not always synchronized. The barcode of so called A. euphorbiae and cinerea specimens do not differ in Central and North-European specimens. As the both taxa are described from Austria and do not differ there from their barcodes either it is reasonable to consider these nominal taxa synonymic and use the oldest available name for this variable taxon, which is Phalaena cinerea Hufnagel, 1766.
