Yleiskuvaus
Stem is straight, smooth with rows of circular leaf scars, grayish-brown and tapers gradually towards the crown. Stem can reach ca. 50 cm in diameter. The crown consists of a cluster of pinnate leaves.A distinctive green crownshaft composed of leaf sheaths is below the leaves. The pinnate leaves are up to 4 m long. Inflorescences form at the base of the crownshaft, are up to 1 m long and many-branched. The flowers are white with pinkish anthers. The fruit is spheroid to ellipsoid in shape, 8.9–15 mm x 7–10.9 mm, green when immature, turning red and eventually purplish-black when mature.
The fruit is eaten by birds and bats, which disperse the seeds. Its flowers are visited by birds and bats, and it serves as a roosting site and food source for a variety of animals.
