Yleiskuvaus
The leaves are arranged spirally, in older plants in rosettes situated at the end of branches. Leaves are succulent, up to 30-60 cm long, lance-shaped and gray-green, with small spikes along the margin. The dry, old, light grey, shrunken, leaves remain attached to the stem. Inflorescence is a simple raceme, up to 80 cm long, with densely packed flowers that vary in colour from yellow to orange or red.
Flowers are tubular, actinomorphic, up to 4cm long. Inside the perianth are 6 stamens, the single style protrudes beyond the perianth and just past the anthers The erect, cylindrical fruit is a capsule, up to 22 x 7mm and divided into 3 chambers. It contains laterally compressed seeds that are obscurely winged.
