Jalosokeriruoko – Saccharum officinarum

Sugarcane originates in Southeast Asia. It has been cultivated in New Guinea for eight thousand years, and, from about 1000 BC, it was gradually spread along human migration routes to Asia and the Indian subcontinent. Sugarcane is cultivated in tropical and subtropical countries worldwide. It is grown in altitudes up to 1600 m close to the equator. Most of the crop is grown between 22°N and 22°S, and some up to 33°N and 33°S.
