Jalosokeriruoko – Saccharum officinarum

The stems are 20-40-noded, varying in colour from green to pinkish or purple, and reaching 6 m in height and 2-5 cm in diameter. The internodes contain fibrous white pith. Leaf sheaths are glabrous, pilose at mouth. Leaves are alternate, 70-150 × 4-6 cm, usually glabrous, auriculate, margins sharply serrate, base encircling the stem, with acuminate apex and large white midrib. Ligule is 2-3 mm, ciliate. Inflorescence is a terminal panicle, 50-100 cm long, broadest at the base and tapering towards the top. The spikelets are borne on side branches and are about 3 mm long and are concealed in tufts of long, silky hair.
