Sinisarjat Agapanthus

Yleiskuvaus

The leaves are basal, curved, and linear, up to 60 cm long, arranged in two opposite rows. The leaves are attached on an underground stem (rhizome) that is used as a storage organ. The roots, which grow out of the rhizome, are white, thick and fleshy. The inflorescence is a pseudo-umbel subtended by two large deciduous bracts at the apex of a long, erect scape (the above ground stem), up to 2 m tall. The flowers are funnel-shaped or tubular, 3-5 cm long, with 6 tepals in shades of blue to purple or white. The style and six stamens are nearly the same length as the tepals. Some hybrids and cultivars have colors not found in wild plants which includes bi-colored blue/lavender and white flowers and white flowers flushed with pink as the blooms mature. Fruit is an elongated three-sided capsule, ca. 5 cm long, that releases 20-100 seeds. The seeds are black, flattened, and have a wing-like projection.
