Eukalyptukset Eucalyptus

Yleiskuvaus

Bark is persistent (`rough barks'), or partly or wholly regularly shedding (`smooth barks'). Leaves are waxy or glossy green, usually lanceolate or sickle-shaped and dimorphic. Juvenile leaves are sessile and opposite, adult leaves usually petiolate and appearing alternate. Many species retain the juvenile leaf form even when the plant is reproductively mature. Oil glands are usually present in leaves. Inflorescences are usually based on condensed dichasia, forming an umbel-like structure, mostly solitary and axillary but sometimes aggregated into compound terminal, pseudo-terminal or axillary structures. Individual inflorescences are usually 7-flowered, but ranging from 1 to >30 flowers in some species. Sepals and/or petals are fused into a cap (calyptra or operculum) which, in later stages, pulls back and reveals a mass of stamens. Stamens are red, yellow, white or cream-coloured, usually in several continuous whorls. Ovary is half-inferior, 2-7-locular, enclosed by hypanthium except at top. Fruit is a capsule, becoming woody in most species.
