Amaryllidaceae are usually bulbous herbs that have rather fleshy and two-ranked leaves and their inflorescense is umbellate and scapose (=without any leaves or bracts).
(The family has two main subfamilies. In Allioideae the plants have a characteristic onion odour and the ovary is superior. In Amaryllidoideae there is no odour and the ovary is inferior.)
