The agavoid subfamily consists of woody rosette plants with hard-succulent and serrate- to spiny-margined leaves. Terminal inflorescence unit is a cyme. 3+3 joined petaloid tepals and 6 stamens attached to the tepals. Many of the herbaceous species were formerly placed in Liliaceae (eg. hyacinths)
