See Thomas (1904a) for designation of the type specimen. Hylochoerus schulzi Zukowsky, 1921 is a synonym of Potamochoerus larvatus hassama (Grimshaw, 1998; Kock and Howell, 2000). Synonymy otherwise follows Grubb (1993).
