Treated as at least four evolutionary species (C. nigrifrons, C. fosteri, C. hooki, and C. rubidus) by Cotterill (2003b). Cephalophus rubidus also regarded as a species separate from C. nigrifrons by Kingdon (1982:292) and Jansen van Vuuren and Robinson (2001), but status revised by Grubb and Groves (2002 and in prep.).
