Reviewed by Spitzenberger (1990b); European range mapped by Mitchell-Jones et al. (1999). Sorex amphibius Brehm, 1826 is probably an earlier name for the species (von Knorre, pers. comm.), although it has to be treated as a nomen oblitum. Karyotype from Spain to Turkey uniformly 2n = 52, FN = 98 (Zima et al., 1998).
