Proturans Protura

Description

Proturans or often referred as "coneheads" are microscopically to extremely small (body < 2 mm) arthropods living in soil with delicate, larvae-like and pigment lacking bodies. Due to lacking pigmentation they are pale to white or light-colored. Proturans are the only hexapod group without antennae and the first pair of legs fulfill the function of them.

The head of proturans are cone-shaped (nickname "coneheads"), with no eyes, no antennae and the mouthparts are entognathous, piercing and simple. Proturans are wingless, their thorax is poorly differentiated from abdomen and tarsi of the legs are 1-segmented ending up in one claw. Proturans do not have cerci.

There are 3 known species in Finland but in general the order is poorly known and studied.
