Growing form

Perennial herb with a strong vertical rhizome.

Size

10–40 cm high.

Stem

The stem is a hollow scape with a single capitulum.

Leaf

The leaves form a basal rosette. The lamina is elongate, lanceolate – obovate, pinnately lobed or toothed, or occasionally nearly entire.

Flower

The capitulum is about 3–7 cm wide. The corollas are yellow. There are often grayish or reddish streaks on the dorsal side of the corolla of ray-florets. The phyllaries are erect and in a single row. The outer phyllaries are in a spiral arrangement around the base of the involucre, often patent or deflexed.

Fruit and seed

The achene is 3–6 mm long, tuberculate or barbed at the upper end, long-beaked. The stalk of the pappus is long, and the pappus is villous.
