Growing form
Perennial rhizomatous grass which forms extensive stands.
Size
30–100 cm high.
Stem
The culm is erect, glabrous, green or blue-green. The rhizome creeping, forked with both short and long branches and white.
Leaf
The leaves are alternate, sessile, sheathed and shorter than the culm. The sheath is often pubescent. The lamina is broad (width 3–12 mm), compressed, narrowly acuminate, glabrous or glabrate on the adaxial side. The stipules are long and curved.
Flower
The inflorescence is an erect, slender, 6–12 cm long compound spike. The spikelets are individually at the nodes of the spikelet axis with the broad side of the spike facing the spikelet axis. The spikelets are sizable (10–15 mm), terete, slightly flattened, with 5–9 bisexual florets. The glumes are long (7–12 mm), acute and terete. The palea and lemmaare approximately of equal length with the glumes. The glumes are typically awnless.
