Growing form
Rhizomatous, loosely cespitose, perennial grass.
Size
30–70 cm high.
Stem
The culm is erect and glabrous. The plant spreads via stolons.
Leaf
The leaves are alternate, sessile, sheathed and distinctly shorter than the culm. The sheaths of the basal leaves are typically pubescent and often reddish. The lamina of the basal leaves is narrow, 0.6–1.3 mm wide, canaliculate, and green or blue-green. There are often two culm leaves with a rather narrow lamina, 2–3 mm wide. The ligule is negligible.
Flower
The inflorescence is an erect, typically reddish panicle (5–15 cm). The panicle consists of quite sizable spikelets (7–10 mm). The branches of the panicle are triangular. The spikelets are fusiform with 5–8 bisexual florets. The glumes are short. The outer glume is half as long as the lemma. The lemma is 4.5–6.5 mm long, with a short awn (0.8–2 mm).
Fruit and seed
Grain.
