Growing form
Perennial herb.
Size
1.5–2(–3) m high.
Stem
The stem is erect, simple and glabrous. The rhizome is creeping.
Leaf
The leaf arrangement is alternate with most of the leaves emerging near the base of the stem. The laminae are long, rather narrow, linear, compressed, rather rigid, and with long sheaths. The sheaths tightly encircle the stem.
Flower
The dense, cylindrical and two sectioned inflorescence is at the summit of the stem. The staminate flowers are in the upper part of the inflorescence, and the pistillate flowers are in the lower part of the inflorescence, separated by a short interval without flowers. Part of the pistillate flowers are sterile. The perianth consists of bristles and narrow scales.
Fruit and seed
The fruit is an achene.
