Growing form
Perennial aquatic herb.
Size
Up to 2.5 m long.
Stem
The rhizome is creeping. The stem is long and heavily branched near the summit.
Leaf
The leaf arrangement is spiral. The leaves are simple, entire, and parallel-veined. All the leaves are sessile submerged leaves. The lamina is 2–7 cm, even 12 cm long, ovate, undulate, finely serrulate, membraneous, brown to green, cordate at the base, amplexicaul, moderately obtuse at the apex, and flat. The stipules are translucent, 0.5–2 cm and fugacious.
Flower
The inflorescence is a spike emerged just at the water surface or raised above it. The peduncle is 4–6 cm long, thinner than the stem. The spike is 2–3 cm long. The flowers are bisexual with a four-leaved perianth.
Fruit and seed
The fruit is drupe-like and approximately 3 mm in diameter.
