Growing form
Erect, perennial herb.
Size
25–40 cm high.
Stem
The stem is stout and reddish in the upper part.
Leaf
The leaves are arranged almost rosette-like at the base of the stem, and without any dots or maculate on the adaxial side. The sheath-like upper leaves protect the developing inflorescence.
Root
The root tubers are small and ovoid.
Flower
The inflorescence is rather lax, cylindrical spike with 10–20 flowers. The flower is large, dark red, and lighter in the middle of the lip. The upper tepals are spreading (the upper tepals of orchid Orchis militaris curve toward each other). The lip is spurred, wide and simple (the lip of Orchis militaris is narrow and lobed).
Fruit and seed
The fruit is a capsule. The seeds are extremely small.
