Growing form

Perennial herb with root tubers.

Size

20–50 cm high.

Stem

The stem is stout and not hollow.

Leaf

The stem is foliate along its length. The lowest 2–4 leaves are obovate, rounded at the apex, compressed, maculate above, blue-gray beneath. The upper leaves are small, narrow, acute and the uppermost leaf does not reach up to the level of the inflorescence. The transition from lower to upper leaves is abrupt. The floral bracts are light-colored, typically shorter than the flowers and serrate.

Root

The root tubers are deeply lobed.

Flower

The inflorescence is a dense, conoidal, many-flowered spike. The flower is red and mottled. The lip is deflexed, broad, spurred and deeply cleft into three lobes. The middle lobe is narrowly deltoid and longer than the lateral lobes.

Fruit and seed

The fruit is a capsule. The seeds are dust-like.
