Growing form

Perennial herb.

Size

20–60 cm high.

Stem

The stem is erect, robust, terete, quadrate only near the base of the stem, and puberulent at the upper end of the stem.

Leaf

The leaves are typically arranged in whorls of eight. The lamina is 15–30 mm long, acicular, and lustrous. The margin is distinctly revolute. The abaxial side of the lamina is pubescent with white hairs.

Root

The root is reddish in color.

Flower

The inflorescence is a broad, narrowly conoidal, dense-flowered compound cyme. The flowers are bisexual. The calyx is reduced. The corolla is four-lobed, rotate, approximately 3 mm wide, yellow and fragrant.

Fruit and seed

The mericarps are 1–1.5 mm long, unarmed, glabrous, and black.
