Description
European names: virile crayfish
American names: virile crayfish, northern crayfish, common crayfish
Orconectes virilis is a generalist, thriving in a wide range of habitats. The life span is about 4 years and individuals may reach a total length of 12 cm, but the usual size is less than 10 cm. In suitable conditions, crayfish burrow efficiently, excavating up to 10 metre long burrow networks in riverbanks. Virile crayfish tolerate winter conditions well, but are not very tolerant of dehydration or low oxygen concentrations.
