Pecari

PecariReichenbach, 1835

Accepted name, Mammal Species of the World 2005

The Collared Peccary should be assigned to a separate genus from the White-lipped species according to Woodburne (1968), Husson (1978:347-348), and Wright (1989). Use of appropriate generic names for these taxa is controversial. Genotypes of Tayassu and Dicotyles by subsequent designation are White-lipped Peccaries (Miller and Rehn, 1901:12; Miller, 1912b:384). Notophorus and Adenonotus are obscure names now categorized as nomina oblita (Article 23.9, International Code of Zoological Nomenclature; International Commission on Zoological Nomenclature, 1999), so the valid generic name for Collared Peccaries is Pecari, with type by monotypy Dicotyles torquatus.
