See comments under Dusicyon. Placed in Atelocynus by Cabrera (1931, 1957), Langguth (1975), Stains (1975), Berta (1985, 1986, 1988) and McKenna and Bell (1997). Van Gelder (1978) considered Atelocynus a subgenus of Canis. Tedford et al. (1995) placed it as the sister taxon to Speothos.
