You can filter by taxon in two ways:
1) Enter names and select suggestions from the drop-down menu. Suggestions are matched to your input if they are found in the database. Matches include scientific (including synonyms) and vernacular names. Selecting taxa returns records of the specified taxa's child taxa (e.g., genera selection will return species records of the genera)
2) If the name you enter is not in the database, or you perform a wildcard name search using asterisks (e.g., "L*"), this will either match the input exactly, or will be a partial match for the taxon name as it was originally supplied.
You can also search by taxon ID (e.g., "MX.26280") and search for multiple taxa at once.
Commonness & rarity refers specifically to Finland. Common Finnish taxa are abundant and widespread while being considered rare indicates there are few individuals found in limited regions.
Note that commonness and rarity has not been determined for all species. For insects specifically, commonness and rarity is based on so-called frequency points: common = 1-29, rare = 30-59, very rare = 60-100.
