You can filter observations by taxonomy in two ways:
1) Entering a name (or part of name) and selecting a suggested taxon from the menu. Suggestions are matched to your input if they are found in the taxonomic database. Matches include scientific names (including synonyms) and vernacular names (in Finnish, English, etc.). Selecting a taxon will return records of the specified taxon's child taxa (e.g., selecting a genus will return records of the species belonging to the genus)
2) Entering a name and pressing return without selecting a suggestion in the menu will return records that either match the input exactly for a taxon in the database (all name types), or are a full or a partial match for the taxon name as it was originally supplied to FinBIF. You can perform wildcard searches with an asterisk (e.g., "Lu*").
You can search for multiple taxa at once and you can also search by taxon ID (e.g., "MX.26280").
Commonness & rarity refers specifically to Finland. Common Finnish taxa are abundant and widespread while being considered rare indicates there are few individuals found in limited regions.
Note that commonness and rarity has not been determined for all species. For insects specifically, commonness and rarity is based on so-called frequency points: common = 1-29, rare = 30-59, very rare = 60-100.
